Zambia's energy regulator has said fuel prices will increase from midnight on Monday due to rising international oil prices and the depreciation of the local currency ,kwacha.

Police in Zambia on Thursday arrested an opposition leader while he was being interviewed on a private television station in Lusaka.

Saviour Chishimba, leader of United Progressive People (UPP) was taken to the police headquarters, a statement by the party's spokesperson, Kizito Mukuka, indicated.

The Energy Regulation Bord ERB has increased the pump prices of petroleum products by k2.12/litre for petrol and k2.61/litre for Diesel, while the price of kerosene has remained unchanged.

ERB board Chairperson Reynolds Bowa said the upward adjustment in prices is inevitable to ensure the sustainable supply of fuel to the Zambian market in the short medium term.

Kenya has sealed a deal with Zambia that will see Kenyan farmers to grow maize in the Southern African country. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi who paid a courtesy call on his Zambian counterpart Reuben Mtolo, said the deal is part of efforts by the government to boost food security.

Zambia is currently preparing its 2019 budget, and the commerce minister says there won't be any changes to the mining tax code, without industry consultation.
