Western governments along with their loyal media and think tanks warn that China is colonizing, exploiting, and forcing Africa into a debt trap. Is this true? Or is it Cold War propaganda? What is China’s actual role in Africa and how does it compare with the West’s?

To help us understand what's really happening, Rania Khalek was joined by two leading African leftists: Mikaela Nhondo Erskog, an educator and researcher with Pan Africanism Today, a researcher at the Tricontinental Institute, and a member of the organizing committee of No Cold War. And Kambale Musavuli, an activist, writer, and analyst with the Center for Research on the Congo.

Read the report Erskog worked on, “Defending Our Sovereignty: US Military Bases in Africa and the Future of African Unity”, here: https://thetricontinental.org/....dossier-42-militaris

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape — controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.

We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities — because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.

People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.

We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

Zambia's Energy Regulation Board has cut fuel prices. The move follows President Edgar Lungu's pledge to do so -- even as Brent crude climbed 13 percent last month.Gas prices will drop by 8.8 percent to 1.26 dollars per litre, while diesel will be 6 percent cheaper. The government increased fuel prices by more than 30 percent in October in a bid to remove the subsidies that the International Monetary Fund had criticized. Zambia imports all of its petroleum products. The kwacha has fallen 3.7 percent against the U.S. dollar since September, while Brent crude has advanced 24 percent over the same period, increasing the cost of imported fuel.
