Liberian Cultural Issues and the Rule of Law by Alexander Redd

Recent reports concerning the dismissal of a case against the National Elections Commission Chairperson, coupled with other political, religious, and cultural issues, are shaping the country's direction. How does the law square well with its due process based on a procedural error, and what are the necessary things the church is doing to preserve the country's Christian tradition and heritage?

Bishop Joseph G. Johnson, III of the Restoration Baptist Ministries, is a special guest with Hosts Alexander Redd and Pastor Suah Deddeh.

This question and answer document addresses the abuses committed during these wars and efforts to bring those responsible to justice, including through a proposed war crimes court.

Cityworks (X)po is an interactive summit of people involved in and passionate about the work of creating vibrant, dynamic, wonderful communities, heldnnually in Roanoke, Virginia, in early October.

Born in Ghana, Sangu’s childhood home was a refuge for victims of torture and violence from neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone. Awarded a full merit scholarship to attend prep school in the U.S., Sangu then graduated from Harvard with highest honors in African Studies and Economics.

While at Harvard, Sangu co-founded cleanacwa (formerly the African Development Initiative), which continues today, rallying academics, non-profits, businesses, and local government to help find and spread effective solutions for water and sanitation access.
Convinced that the real needs of communities can best be met through entrepreneurship, in 2008 he founded Golden Palm Investments to fund promising start-ups that can have social impact and generate jobs.
Sangu has been noticed by many national publications. Most recently, in 2014, Forbes named Sangu as one of Africa’s top 30 Under 30 Entrepreneurs, and Euromoney named Sangu “Africa’s Rising Star” and featured him in the May edition of the magazine.
Sangu is an author and poet, publishing Contemporary Africa through Poetry in 2012 and a forthcoming book, Seeding Growth: Africa’s Youngest Entrepreneurs. He loves the outdoors and trekked Mount Everest in 2013, and is currently training to summit Kilimanjaro during the summer of 2014.

The motion: "Aid to Africa is doing more harm than good"

Moderator: Brian Lehrer
Speaking for the motion: George Ayittey, William Easterly and David Rieff
Speaking against the motion: C. Payne Lucas, John McArthur and Gayle Smith

IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.

Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

In 1816, a group of men met to create an organization that would be responsible for the systematic relocation of Free African Americans from the US mainland. Their actions would lead to decades of conflict and bloodshed. The Americo-Liberians, descendants of the original settlers, would go on to establish a government that was modelled after the United States. However, this government would be plagued by corruption and inequality, leading to a series of coups and civil wars that would last for decades. Today, Liberia is still grappling with the legacy of its past, as it struggles to build a stable and prosperous society.
