This episode is from my solo overland ride from Tofo to Tete. This particular section of the road stretches for over 1100 km in a very remote part of Mozambique which is heavily controlled by the army due to recent attacks on civilians. Luckily, I managed to reach Tete without any trouble and I had a chance to hang out with my friend Isaura and her family again.

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Throughout my journey, I'm raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible, so please donate generously: https://gogetfunding.com/arewethereyet/

When travelling through Zinave National Park, one might ask how it is possible that pieces of paradise like this still exist. Lush green wetlands teeming with life, glades of baobabs with their finger-like branches reaching up to the sky, the magnificent Save River carving its way through the landscape and wildlife, both big and small, dot the expansive plains.

Even more remarkable is that less than half a decade ago, the sights we see today may have seemed like nothing more than a dream. Zinave has gone from being a hunting concession in the 1960s to being declared a protected area in 1972. Shortly thereafter, it suffered years of conflict where the wildlife population was decimated for bush meat to the thriving wilderness haven we see today.

Peace Parks Foundation’s CEO, Werner Myburgh, reflects on how far the park has come in the last few years and celebrates the historic conservation milestones achieved in 2022.

The struggles of Mozambique, from its once majestic capital Maputo, to a village where recruits are being trained for the army. Subscribe to Our History: https://bit.ly/3v5mKBG

Children in Mozambique have a smaller chance of surviving their first year of life than anywhere else in the world. Every eight minutes war, starvation or disease claims the life of a Mozambiquan child. Little boys look like old men. In Mozambique youth is fleeting. This is the legacy of 25 years of armed conflict, which has severely wounded Africa's poorest nation. One million peasant farmers have fled their homes to refugee camps, where they live on food handouts. Famine threatens one quarter of the population.. The Mozambiquan people are struggling for survival. The origins of the conflict causing this suffering is investigated, stemming back to when the Mozambiquan revolution was paralysed over a decade ago.

Praia do Xai-Xai is approximately 10 km from the town of Xai-Xai and 220 km from Maputo. The massive reef running parallel to the beach provides natural protection against the strong waves at high tide and forms several small pools at low tide.
Xai-Xai Camping: Adjacent to Hotel Halley, the campsite of Praia do Xai-Xai is situated right on the beach among shady trees. The campsite offers a restaurant and bar area, where you can enjoy peri-peri chicken or watch the latest sport event via satellite TV. Basic 4 and 2 bedded reed huts; all with single beds are on offer. Guests must use the central ablutions in the campsite. A central braai and wash up area is located among the reed huts. The camp also boasts one en-suite fully equipped self-catering chalet. Praia do Chongoene: The spectacular Chongoene reef, which is approximately 70 meters offshore and 3 km long, offers safe swimming and serves as a platform for reef and game fishing. Chongoene, which is adjacent to Xai-Xai, is known worldwide for its huge barracuda catches as well as a great variety of other game fish. The coral reefs are wonderful and will introduce you to the untouched wonders of Africa's East Coast marine life, either through scuba diving or snorkeling. Chongoene Holiday Resort offers 2, 4 and 8 bed self-catering log cabins high on the dunes within the coastal forest overlooking the spectacular bay and reef. The campsite is set right on the beachfront among shady trees. Some of the camp sites offer barracas which can be used either as a kitchen or lounge area. Hot and cold water ablution facilities with flush toilets are available.
Xai-Xai Beach hotel: High on the dunes between Xai-Xai and Praia de Chongoene the spectacular Xai-Xai Beach hotel is situated. The hotel is constructed out of wood and thatch that blends in with its surroundings, and is build on stilts overlooking the idyllic Indian Ocean. The chalets are scattered around a fresh water pool and connected by pathways.
